PhD in Forest Ecology (Italy, 1998). Between 1998 and 2001 post-doc at Univ. Tuscia working on carbon budget of forest ecosystems. From October 2001 to July 2004 Research Officer at European Commission, Joint Research Center, Ispra (VA, Italy), Institute for Environment and Sustainability, Climate Change Unit. In July 2004 he become Researcher at the Institute for Agriculture and Forest Systems in the Mediterranean of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR-ISAFOM), where he has been Senior Researcher (2007-2009), Research Director (2010-2016) and Director of the Institute (Apr 2016-March 2020). In April 2020, he started working as Director of the newly established Institute for BioEconomy of CNR (CNR-IBE, current position).
Since 1991 he has been involved in several international research projects of the IV, V, VI, VII and H2020 EU framework programmes, dealing with forest ecosystems (biomass, productivity, canopy fluxes, impact of climate change and elevated CO2, modelling), long-term monitoring and ecological research. Since 2013, he co-coordinates the ALForLab Public-Private Laboratory (PON03PE_000024_1) on advanced inventory system to improve the environment-forest-wood chain in Calabria and the Mediterranean and since 2012 the Italian Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER Italy). He is involved in the eLTER, ICOS and LifeWatch research infrastructures. He is currently Vice-President of the Italian Society for Silviculture and Forest Ecology.
